Audrey Jamal
It’s been a while. Just busy and lazy; you know, the usual… Anyway, I put Audrey’s entire name down just because it’s so damn cool. I tried to capture a few things here: 1) indiscriminate racial heritage. I just don’t know what ethnicity she is. Jamal makes me think something Persian (?). I remember seeing her in person so I think I’ve kind of come close in terms of color-matching, but even the right shade doesn’t equate to an ethnicity. After all, it’s not like every race has its own Pantone, or anything.
2) As I alluded, I knew her. Well, “knew” is a stretch – but when you’ve gone to skool with someone for five or six years (from grade skool onto hi), you do know them – even if they are a grade ahead of you. That was the case with Audrey.
3) Denim shirts were pretty darn popular in the late 80s/early 90s, as evident from Audrey’s outfit. Everyone rocked them shits – which I see are making a comeback of sorts as we speak. Much better interpretation these days, I must say…
4) She has these great eyes that straight leapt off the page. Multiple attempts at capturing them adequately have failed – so we’ll just settle for this for now. What’s more, the whole page may be one of the all-time greats for amazing portraits. Mark H. and Audrey Jamal are just the tip of the iceberg lettuce…
